State of Tennessee Online Driver Services - FAQs
In order to complete an online driver services session, you will need to provide an email address that you can access so that you may receive a confirmation number when you are finished. If you do not have an email address, you will need to create one or use a friend or relative’s email address.
You can click Cancel at any time before you click submit if you choose not to proceed with the action you are doing.
No. Be sure to have all the information you need with you, including your credit card information if necessary, to complete your session. If cannot complete your session, you can click Cancel and start over at a later time.
Use the Previous and Next control buttons to go back or forward if you would like to go back and make any changes. You will not be able to make any changes after you have clicked submit on the final screen.
You will not be able to proceed until all required fields have been entered and there are no errors. Check to make sure that there are no required fields left blank on your screen. This includes textboxes, drop down fields, and check boxes.
You can reprint a copy of your confirmation page from the Driver Services home screen. You will need to know your confirmation number from the email you received.
Check to make sure that have entered your address correctly. If you are still getting this message and you are positive that it is your correct residential address, then proceed with your address as you have entered it by selecting As Entered in the address window.
Yes. The address entered for the residential address will be the address that will appear on the license you receive.
No. Enter a mailing address only if you have one, and you would like mail to be sent to your mailing address instead of your residential address. If you do not enter a mailing address, all mail correspondence will be sent to your residential address.
Tennessee Online Driver Services only will display what you are eligible for at this time. If you don’t see the option you’re looking for, then you are not eligible to perform that action.

Yes. You may begin your Tennessee Driver License, Permit or ID application online but to complete the process, you must visit a driver service center with the following documents: Proof of U.S. Citizenship, Lawful Permanent Resident Status or Temporary Legal Presence documents. Proof of Tennessee Residency Proof of SS# if one has been issued Current State License/ID, with proof of name change if required. A completed Application for Tennessee Driver License
Yes. If you are transferring in from another state, you need to provide your license from the previous state you are transferring in from. If you do not have your previous license, you will need to take a Knowledge and Road Skills Exam when you go to a driver services center.
You should receive your renewal license/ID by mail within 20 business days. However, once you renew online, the printed confirmation page of this transaction can be used as a legitimate extension of your license/ID and is valid for 20 days from the transaction date. If your license has, or will soon be, expired, you must print and carry a copy of this confirmation along with your current driver license.
Yes. The advantage of renewing an expired license/ID online is that the minute your renewal is confirmed, your record is updated. You will receive a confirmation page when your online license/ID renewal is complete and you must print and carry a copy of this confirmation along with your expired driver license. It is a valid license/ID extension for 20 days from the date you renewed online.
Yes. If you are renewing your non-commercial license or state ID license, you will be asked to enter your residence and mailing addresses. Enter your new address, which will be printed on your license. CDL license holders must visit a Driver Service Center with acceptable proof of domicile to change the residential address. Mailing addresses may be updated online.
No. To change your name you must bring the original certified legal document that authorizes the name change (i.e. marriage certificate, court order, adoption decree, etc.) to a driver license station for a new license/ID with your new name, signature and photo. If it is not time for you to renew your license the cost for the name change and a new license/ID is $8 (or $12 if this is not your first replacement during this renewal cycle).
You may use either a credit card or check card that has the MasterCard or Visa logo on it. You can now also use Discover.You cannot use prepaid cards.
You will receive a confirmation page when your online license/ID renewal is complete. If you do not receive a confirmation page, send an e-mail to online.driverlicense@tn.gov, or call 1-866-849-3548.
Yes. If you want your new license/ID mailed to your temporary address, you can do so by entering a "Send To" address. You cannot have the license/ID sent out of country or to an APO.
Yes. However you cannot change the residence address to an address that is outside of Tennessee. Even though you may be stationed elsewhere, you must maintain a valid Tennessee residence address. You cannot have the license/ID sent out of country or to an APO via this online service, but you can enter a different "Send to" address within the U.S. To learn more about license renewals for military personnel, see https://www.tn.gov/safety/driver-services/classd/dlrenew.html.
Only drivers that already have a Non-Photo license can they keep the Non- photo flag If you have another qualifying exception(s), such as Active Duty Military, medical disability, etc. contact the Department of Safety for specific details and instructions. If the option to renew your license does not appear once you have logged in, it is because you are not eligible to renew your license at this time. You may renew your license starting one year before the expiration date and ending with five years after your license has expired.

If the option to order a duplicate license does not appear once you have logged in, it is because you are not eligible to order a duplicate license at this time. Be sure that your license is not expired, cancelled, suspended, or revoked.

Yes. You can graduate from an intermediate restricted license to an intermediate unrestricted license if you’ve had your IR for at least 12 months and you are 17 years old. You can also graduate your intermediate restricted license to a regular Class D if you are 18 years old.
Yes. You can graduate from an intermediate unrestricted to a regular Class D if you are at least 18 and have had your IU for at least 12 months and you are 18 years old.
If the option you’re looking for to advance your GDL License is not there, then you are not eligible to receive that credential at this time. Check to make sure that you are the appropriate age and that you have held your current license for the required amount of time.
To monitor your status online, continue checking under View reinstatement requirements/pay reinstatement fees. When all requirements for reinstatement of driving privileges are met, your status will change to Eligible for a valid driver license, Valid, or Expired. If the status changes to "ELIG" or "EXPIRED", as long as you are not revoked, suspended, or cancelled in another state, you can reissue your license online or apply for a valid driver license at a Driver License Service Center. You must show proof that you are a U.S. Citizen (certified birth certificate or U.S. Passport), two forms of identification (such as social security card or work ID), two proofs of residency current within the last four months (such as utility bill, W-2, etc.), and pay a driver license fee to obtain a valid driver license. If you have not held a valid license in the last five years, then you will be required to take full test. If the status changes to VALID and you do not have a driver license in your possession, you should take the same type documents listed above and apply for a duplicate driver license.
You may use either a MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or American Express credit card or a check card that has the MasterCard or Visa logo on it. You cannot use prepaid cards.

You are not required to pay the full amount at one time. The "Total Amount Due" on the payment page is the amount you still owe. You may return to the Web application to continue making payments. Please note that your driving privileges will not be reinstated until you have paid the entire amount due.

Your driving privileges are not reinstated until your payment AND all other reinstatement requirements have been processed by the Department of Safety.

If you do not have an option to reissue your license after reinstatement, then you are not eligible for reissue. You cannot be reissued a license after you’ve been revoked/suspended until you have fully satisfied all of your requirements to reinstate your license. This includes any fees, required documentation, and time served for the duration of the suspension/revocation.
No. You will not receive a new license or sticker for the back of your license, or new handgun carry permit. The law only requires that you notify us of an address change and you do not necessarily need a new license or permit. If you want your new address on your license you can either: Order a duplicate and update your address during the process, or If you are eligible to renew your license (12 months before expiration), you can renew online and update your address during the process. Both the duplicate and renewal processes ask for your address.

Changing your address here only updates your address for your driver license and handgun carry permit (if you have one). This online service does not allow P.O. Boxes, Forwarding, or In Care of (C/O) addresses to be entered for the Residence Address. You may enter a P.O. Box for the Mailing Address only. If you must use any of the other address types please contact the Department of Safety at 1-866-849-3548 or go to a driver license station.
Yes you may update the residence address on your Tennessee record online; however you cannot change the Residence Address to an address that is outside of Tennessee. Even though you may be stationed elsewhere, you must maintain a valid Tennessee residence address.
Yes. For permit holders: You can schedule an appointment 45 days prior to your eligibility date and up to the expiration date of your permit. You may not take a skills test with an expired permit. You can cancel up to 1 day prior to your appointment. If you fail to appear for an appointment without prior notification then you must wait 30 days to make another appointment.
Yes. Once you have scheduled your appointment, you can log into TN Online Driver Services and select Cancel your Existing Appointment.
If you do not see an option to schedule a road skills test appointment, then you are currently not eligible to schedule a road test. For permit holders: You can schedule an appointment 45 days prior to your eligibility date and up to the expiration date of your permit. You may not take a skills test with an expired permit.

No. Your email will only be used to send you important information regarding your Tennessee License.You will receive an email reminder to renew 60, 30, and 10 days prior to the expiration date of your license.
Yes. You can only add one emergency contact at a time but you can repeat the process for each individual you would like to have as an emergency contact.
To add an emergency contact you will you will need the full name, telephone number and email address of the individual you would like to add as an emergency contact.
An emergency contact is someone you trust that the Department of Safety and Homeland Security can contact in case of an emergency.
